When hunters think about improving antler growth, fawn development and overall herd health, nutrition is usually the first thing that comes to mind. We provide quality feed, establish mineral sites and work to improve available habitat.

But providing valuable nutrition is only part of the equation.

Ticks, fleas, biting midges—commonly called no-see-ums—and internal parasites can place constant pressure on a deer’s body. These pests may consume blood, irritate the skin, interfere with digestion and force the animal to use valuable energy and nutrients simply to maintain itself.

In other words, the nutrients you are working to provide may never reach their full potential.

External Parasites Take More Than Blood

Ticks are blood-feeding parasites that attach firmly to their host and may remain attached for several days. Heavy parasite pressure means repeated blood loss, skin irritation and added stress on the animal. Ticks can also transmit pathogens while feeding.

Fleas and other biting insects can create similar problems. Each individual bite may appear insignificant, but deer living in warm, humid environments may be exposed to thousands of bites over the course of a season.

Biting midges are especially easy to overlook. These extremely small insects are often called no-see-ums because hunters may feel them biting without ever seeing them. Like ticks and other biting flies, female biting midges feed on blood.

Persistent biting can lead to irritation, restlessness and increased grooming. Instead of feeding comfortably, bedding undisturbed and conserving energy, deer are forced to react constantly to insects.

That energy has to come from somewhere.

Internal Parasites Compete From the Inside

Internal parasites can be even more difficult to recognize because there may be no obvious outward signs until the parasite burden becomes severe.

Gastrointestinal worms may damage the lining of the stomach or intestines, consume blood and interfere with normal nutrient absorption. Heavy infections in ruminants are associated with anemia, poor growth, weight loss and protein loss through the digestive tract.

A deer may be eating regularly while still failing to receive the full benefit of its diet.

For does, parasite pressure can be especially costly during late pregnancy and lactation. These periods already create high nutritional demands. A doe must maintain her own body while supporting fetal development and later producing milk for her fawns.
